Degrees of Horror

Savage Tale 2: Chickens in the Mist

It all started when Chris received an invitation to an illegal chicken fighting ring. The students not particularly interested in watching chickens fight to the death arrived at the meeting location with generally more questions than they had answers. These questions were quickly dispelled however as the group came upon a grisly scene.

The signs were there and no one knew what horrors lay in wait. There were signs of a struggle, blood, a computer filled with files on experimental genetically modified chickens, giant chicken footprints, thousands of chicken corpses, and finally giant cages that lay mangled and open. The writing wasn't on the wall, it was screaming as the group ventured ever further into the dark woods, exploring the now seemingly vacant buildings. By the time they reached the end it was already too late.

The notion that they were someplace they shouldn't be and that they should get out of there only came upon them as they reached the very ends of the complex of barns and sheds. By the time they walked outside of the building that had housed the giant monstrosities, they were already surrounded. Four chickens the size of a large dog marched out onto the road in front of the students and another four closed off their escape. Lance, trying to clear a path back towards the cages attempted to shoot his shotgun at the chickens behind them. The shotgun clicked and jammed and left Lance defenseless as he attempted to clear the jam. The chickens in front of the students quickly ran up and pounced one after another onto Chad, instantly putting him down and knocking him unconscious as they set about tearing into his insides. Pedro, shaking off a chicken that had attempted to pursue him, cut and started running towards another nearby shed. Chris, attempting to attack one of the chickens swung an axe he carried, slipping on the muddy ground and falling on his back, the axe being thrown off into the distance. Driven into a panic, Chris managed to outmaneuver the chicken and begin running after Pedro.

What came next was a series of tragedies even Shakespeare would have lowered his head in shame. Lance left alone with nothing but his gun, stood his ground in an attempt to fight off the army of feathery fiends. Although he managed to blast a few into fluffy oblivion, Lance was ultimately overwhelmed and met his fate, alone and disappointed.

Pedro managed to get to the shed where he found two much larger chickens pecking around inside the cab of the truck. Unseen he set about a plan to roast the overgrown poultry. Grabbing a can of fuel, Pedro began to stealthily pour it all around the truck. He managed to finish this task unseen, however, before he could get clear of the gasoline and ignite it, one of the chickens bumped the horn on the truck startling the other. The chicken swung it's head up meeting eyes with Pedro. The birds burst from the truck pouncing on Pedro, knocking him down before they began pecking and tearing at his flesh. Then a noise came that distracted them from their grisly task.

Having made it to the shed and seeing the large chickens, Chris decided to keep running out of the woods towards his SUV. Making it, he jumped inside and attempted to start driving over the smaller chickens that had been chasing him. The ground was wet and muddy and the chickens merely bounced off the hood of the car doing little damage. The larger chickens, who came to investigate the new disturbance jumped on the hood and began pecking at the glass windshield. Chris attempted to stomp on the brakes but in the mud only managed to lose control and slide into a deep rut that stuck the vehicle deep into a hole. The windshield held out for a long time, slowly being pecked away. In a desperate attempt to escape the situation, Chris jumped out of the SUV running back towards the shed where Pedro, who was extremely wounded but still alive, lay dying in the puddle of gasoline.

Chris made it to the shed, dodging the chickens as they attempted to catch him. In a panicked maddened state, Chris grabbed the igniter tool out of the hands of Pedro and stepping to the side sets the fuel alight, catching Pedro and one of the chickens on fire. The flame spread fast and in the distraction, Chris managed to crawl out of the shed unseen and run into the surrounding woods.

Chris, now alone, made his way through the woods without further incident. Finding a nearby road where he was picked up and brought to the hospital to receive medical attention for a few scrapes and cuts, the deeper injuries being to his mind.

If there was ever a session I could mulligan, this would be it. The rolls were so bad for you all with critical fails happening left and right. Honestly, if Vanessa were in the group at the time I would have written it off as a precognitive vision and hand-waved the entire debacle away.
